i hate when people use that phrase "BOMBS!" to me that implies a detonation -- a singular event.

to me, what i like about phil's playing is his "flow of melodic ideas" over a stretch of time. what is a "bomb'? the first chord of Morning Dew? or when they finally slam back into the chorus in full on a hot Sunshine Daydream? i guess maybe Let It Grow might find phil letting go some bombs....

but "Phil Bombs"? i don't know, we can probably find some shows where he was drunk or high and bombed....?

What I mean by it is one of those huge bass notes that just blows you away when you hear it. Sorry to offend you with my terminology. I appreciate a good Phil solo or performance as much as anybody, but for this thread, I'm looking for power.

yeah, nothing personal -- you just happened to use the phrase -- it is common deadhead parlance i believe -- certainly they throw it around a bit in the Taping Compendium.

so don't come at me with this "sorry i offended you" crap -- i am not a fucking snob -- i'm a fucking deadhead -- you just happened to bring up this term i always thought was so silly......

hey, if you're after POWER (lol) well then just cut to the chase my man, check out this shit maybe this is your new calling?

oh here, this guy hits some of the big ones, Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Helloween -- NOW WE'RE TALKING POWER!!!!!!!!!!

good luck in your search.

sounds like you're s snobby fuckin Deadhead to me. Most of us have their pet peeves though. One of mine happens to be the Mind left Body Jam. Used to be a HUGE Airplane fan and was very familiar with all of those real Starship albums. IF that jam sounds similar maybe it's because it did rise out of the PERRO sessions around that time but it's more than a stretch to name it after that song. Sounds nothing like it to me.

I think you're snobbery is off base on this one though. Come on, CLEARLY there are time where Phil drops those huge loud low notes. There's nothing flowing and melodic happening then like you mentioned, just raw sonic power.

oh thanks! you brought up one of my other lest favorite colloquialisms -- "if it looks like a duck...." usually it is some ignorant piece of shit espousing some equally ignorant observation aimed at pleasing other like-minded, ignorant, low-brow pieces of shit -- "hey i didn't say he/she was a fag, but if it looks like...." well guess what, if you smell like a dog pissed on you well then .....

(BTW, FUCK BOMBS!)

yeah man..... RAW SONIC POWER -- (let me inject that with some CAPITALIZED POOOOWWWWER)

hey, this thread is still alive!?!?!???? wow -- what a bunch of stoners wont discuss ad infinitum?

How can you deny that the "Your Mind Has Left Your Body" is the inspiration for Mind Left Body Jam?!
Listen to the solo before the last verse... clearly the origin. I say that as an airplane fan.

it's not clear to me and I've heard Baron Von Tollbooth many times. Have you listened to the Perro sessions? There's an uptempo jam on there that's much closer.

Notice Dick says " WE"?

GG: so, I get the first question! Why is Mud Love Buddy Jam mislabeled on DP12?

DL: there are several reasons...reason #1 we do not like the terminology of mind left body indicator of this jam

GG: yes, but this is NOT that jam! The MLB Jam is on disc 3

DL: # 2 this has been explained before by Phil and John Cutler; they both were in an amusing mood one day, John suddenly said MUD LOVE BUDDY, and Phil cracked up, and we all thought Why not? And lets go to # 3 reason, …in fact well now I lost it… just a minute…the whole nature of the Grateful Dead band who made playing flawed an artform!

GG: yes, but WHY is the jam between China Cat and Rider labeled MLB Jam?

DL: It's a mistake

GG: okay

DL: i am befuddled myself

Forum: GratefulDead Subject: to clarify

I am not trying to say the GD's version, this jam, is exactly the "your mind left your body" without music. I am saying, the similarity is there.
I am not disputing that it truly originated from the PERRO session, perhaps this influenced the creation Your Mind Has Left Your Body song... Jerry held a lot of sway with them after all...
My only point is, there are obvious similarities, not exact replications of notes, etc.

To sort this out once and for all... We disagree, but neither of us can prove it (though I would say most agree with me, that doesn't prove a thing)...
Who named the MLB Jam the MLB Jam anyhow? Let's ask that person where they got the name from?

It is reasonable assume it was someone close to the Dead, who would have been able to ask them where they got the tune from, and that the name is therefore accurate... I doubt it was just some random, catchy yet unrelated naming; you seem to support this idea since you say the song is completely unrelated to the song "your mind has left your body"... what is the motivation for naming it that if there is noooooooo relation/similarity to the tune? To throw everyone off scent? And the motivation for that?

Still... this proves nothing. Go right to the source and ask the horse.

Well then you are obviously not reasonable. The jam wasn't named by the band. I don't know exactly who it was but I think it's Dead base/taper related and it caught on because after all it is a distinct not one of a kind jam so might as well have a name. So obviously someone named it who heard what you hear. Why so bitter? I just don't think it sounds like that song, certainly not as " clearly" as you think it does. So what? I suppose a musician who reads music could make a less subjective take on it based on notes and chord progressions and key.

Nothing bitter in what I said, just coming to a reasonable conclusion. Whether you like it or not, it is reasonable to hear the similarity, technical or not, it sounds very similar, hence the name has stuck.
It caught on precisely because it is a reasonable connection to make. Whether it is the actual factual representation, irrelevant; it is reasonable. If you prefer to name them something else in your collection, you are perfectly welcome to do so. May you have the backing of Dick behind you :-P
